Medicare in Florida
May 20, 2026
Florida Medicare quick facts (2026)
- Beneficiaries: Over 5 million Floridians are enrolled in Medicare — second only to California.
- Active Advantage carriers: Humana, UnitedHealthcare, Florida Blue (BCBS FL), Aetna, WellCare, Cigna, Devoted Health, CarePlus and others compete heavily across the state.
- State Medicaid program: Florida Medicaid (Statewide Medicaid Managed Care) — relevant for dual-eligible coordination.
- Snowbird tip: If you spend part of the year up north, check whether your Advantage plan has a PPO or national-network feature; otherwise consider Original Medicare + Medigap for nationwide flexibility.
Common Florida Medicare questions
Q: When can I enroll in Medicare in Florida?
A: Same federal calendar everywhere: your 7-month Initial Enrollment Period around age 65, the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15 – Dec 7, 2026), and the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (Jan 1 – Mar 31, 2027).
Q: Can I switch Medigap plans in Florida without underwriting?
A: Generally only during your one-time 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period or a federal guaranteed-issue trigger. Florida does not have a state birthday or anniversary rule, though Florida does require Medigap insurers to offer guaranteed-issue Plan A to anyone under 65 on Medicare due to disability.
Q: I'm a snowbird — will my Florida Advantage plan work up north?
A: Emergency and urgent care are covered nationwide. Routine care typically requires in-network providers, so a multi-state PPO or Original Medicare + Medigap may fit better.
Q: Why are there so many Advantage plans in Florida?
A: High Medicare enrollment plus aggressive carrier competition. The trade-off is that plan benefits and networks change every year — review your Annual Notice of Change letter each fall.

Medicare basics in Florida
Medicare is a federal program, so the core rules are the same in Florida as everywhere else — but the specific plans available, premiums, and carrier networks vary by ZIP code and by county.
Most Florida residents become eligible for Medicare at 65 through Social Security. See our eligibility guide for the full rules including disability and ESRD.
For the 7-month enrollment window timeline, see Turning 65.
What Florida residents typically compare
- Medicare Advantage — Many Florida counties have 20-50+ Advantage plans to choose from. Plans, premiums, and extras vary by county.
- Medicare Supplement (Medigap) — Plans are standardized federally, but premium pricing and underwriting rules vary by state. Florida has its own Medigap pricing rules.
- Part D prescription drug plans — Available statewide, but formularies (covered drug lists) and preferred pharmacy networks differ by plan.
See Advantage vs. Supplement for the side-by-side framework.
Florida Medigap timing rules
The federal Medigap Open Enrollment window is the same everywhere — 6 months starting the month you turn 65 AND have Part B. During that window, no medical underwriting.
Outside that window, most states (including Florida unless otherwise noted) allow Medigap carriers to use medical underwriting — meaning they can deny you or charge more based on health. A few states have year-round guaranteed-issue rules. Check Florida's State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) for current rules.
See our switching from Advantage to Medigap guide for the timing trap.
